Emily discovers Gregory is her father

The Negotiation

Emily discovers Gregory is her father through a sequence of questions, recollections, and confirmation rather than a single announcement. Gregory first says he thinks she may be his daughter; later, Crystal confirms that he is. Between those moments, Emily asks him to explain his history with Karen, and his account gives her a past her mother had kept from her. The discovery revises Emily’s understanding of both her family and the guarded beliefs about love she had inherited.

The First Disclosure

Gregory’s first approach begins with a question about Karen Wade. Emily answers that Karen was her mother, and the question strikes her with immediate force: her heart sinks before she knows why he is asking. When Gregory later tells her he thinks she may be his daughter, the possibility becomes explicit. The exchange is interrupted when Katie Collins drops the jewelry rack she is holding, making the revelation a shock witnessed in the shop as well as a private turning point for Emily.

The claim does not settle Emily’s identity. Gregory presents it as a possibility, and Emily must decide what to ask and whom to trust. She later seeks Gregory out to learn how he met Karen, how old they were, and what their relationship had been. Her questions are specific: she wants the history behind his claim, not merely reassurance that it is true. That insistence leads the scene away from speculation and toward a detailed account of the past.

Gregory’s Account of Karen

Gregory says he and Karen met through a mutual friend when they were both sixteen. Crystal introduced them on a beach, where Karen was sitting on a blanket in a black-and-white polka-dot bikini. He remembers being struck by her beauty and by a smile he says resembled Emily’s. The physical detail and the resemblance connect the mother Emily knew to the young woman Gregory remembers, while underscoring how little of this history Emily had been told.

According to Gregory, he and Karen spent the summer together, saw each other nearly every day, and grew closer over the next three years. They discussed marriage, children, and a shared future. Karen hoped to own a business; Gregory had long wanted to serve in the army, as his father, uncles, and grandfather had done. He says Karen repeatedly tried to dissuade him. He attended community college for a year, but ultimately enlisted, believing their relationship would endure his training and that he would return to marry her.

The departure for training brought a reversal. On that day, Karen told Gregory she was pregnant and begged him not to leave. He describes the news as the happiest day of his life, but says he had already committed to going. He promised to write every day and return after ten weeks of training so they could marry and raise a family. Later, when Emily asks how he knew Karen was pregnant, Gregory says she had come to him because she was sick and intended to tell Emily when she returned from Montauk. His recollections place the pregnancy within their relationship and make clear that Karen had not simply mentioned Gregory as someone from her distant past.

Confirmation and Concealment

Emily eventually asks Crystal directly whether Gregory is her father. Crystal answers yes. That confirmation resolves the uncertainty left by Gregory’s tentative claim, but it also opens a second question: why Emily had never been told. Crystal explains that Karen had asked her to keep the truth from Emily. After learning Gregory would not be coming home from training, Karen changed, regarded that part of her life as over, and focused on Emily as the person who mattered most. She wanted to begin again somewhere new and raise her daughter there.

The account gives Emily two perspectives on the same separation. Gregory remembers a promised return after ten weeks; Crystal describes Karen’s belief that he would not come home and the new life Karen built after that loss. The evidence establishes the pregnancy, the plan to tell Emily, and Karen’s request for secrecy, but does not resolve every circumstance surrounding Gregory’s absence. What it does establish is that Emily’s ignorance was deliberate: Karen had chosen to remove Gregory from the story she told about her life, and Crystal honored that choice.

What the Discovery Changes

One month after speaking with Crystal, Emily says that she and Gregory are slowly building a father-daughter relationship. The biological fact has been confirmed, but their relationship is still developing through contact rather than arriving fully formed with the revelation. Gregory’s wife welcomes Emily, adding an immediate family response even as Emily and Gregory begin learning how to relate to each other.

The discovery also changes how Emily understands her own approach to intimacy. She says that learning what happened to Karen led her to let go of what her mother had taught her: she no longer guarded her heart or wanted to play it safe. This shift matters because her feelings for Jackson are intensifying while their arrangement remains a companionship rather than the committed relationship she wants. They spend four nights a week together, and on the other three Emily tosses and turns; Katie Collins and Evelyn Rose encourage her to make her feelings known. Emily is still afraid because Jackson continues to reject relationships, but she now wants to be his girlfriend rather than settle for an arrangement that only feels like one. Gregory’s disclosure therefore does more than supply a missing parentage: it exposes the grief and secrecy behind Karen’s caution, giving Emily reason to choose a different emotional future.
